Personal Development
The Personal Development curriculum intent is to ensure that every student leaves Sandringham with:
- the character and values to become a responsible, caring citizen who is supportive of all others in the community.
- the knowledge of how to build, create and sustain meaningful relationships that lead to social fulfilment.
- the ability to pursue further study or employment in a way that is informed and leads to professional success.
- the understanding of how to live in a healthy way that promotes safety and happiness.
Personal Development is taught for two hours a week in Year 7 and one hour week in all other years from Year 8 – 13.
The major and minor themes covered each year in the Personal Development curriculum are:
-
- Futures & Careers – What’s out there? & Work Ready.
- Health & Wellbeing – Physical health, Mental health & Risk behaviours.
- British values & Character – Equality, Democracy, Performance character & Moral character.
- Sex & Relationships – Platonic relationships, Intimate relationships, Ready for sex & Related issues.
- Community & Citizenship – Helping others, Protecting the environment & Building citizenship.
These themes are studied each year so students can progressively build on their knowledge and revisit key statutory content. Within these themes, students will study content that is age appropriate and allows them to use prior knowledge to improve understanding.
As part of curriculum quality assurance, each academic year we host a Relationships and Sex Education Parents Information Evening in December/January. This evening provides information about the curriculum content/delivery and allows consultation on the statutory relationships and sex education taught in the subject. Below are the resources shared at the 2022 information evening as well as the schools RSE policy. If you have concerns about the Personal Development curriculum, then please email Katie Wills, Director of Learning for Personal Development.
